An Iconic Private Retreat on Beautiful Red Cedar Lake | Ski Chalet in Birchwood

3 Bedroom Ski Chalet in Birchwood
Known for its beautiful sunsets and great-lake view, the Freeborn Chalet on Red Cedar Lake is in northeast Barron County, Wisconsin. This iconic 3-story chalet was built in the 1960’s in Nordic tradition with wood and stacked stone, steeply pitched gabled roof, lots of natural light, and a small footprint. Under new ownership in 2022, it has been updated over the years from its hardwood floors to soaring wall of windows.
Along with central heat and air-conditioning, the chalet offers 2 bedrooms, bath, and a living/dining/kitchen area on the main floor; a bedroom area and bath in the open loft; family room, bath, and laundry/utility on the lower level. The open kitchen with an island and modern appliances provides a pleasant place for preparing meals. Outside is a new deck, 3 season porch with new windows, yard space for outdoor games, private dock, 200 feet of shoreline, fire pit facing the lake, and parking space for boat and trailer in the driveway.
Located on the western edge of the historic Blue Hills natural area (https://ruskcountywi.com/the-blue-hills/ ) , multi-recreational 1,897 acre Red Cedar Lake has a maximum depth of 53 feet and great water quality for swimming, tubing, canoeing, kayaking, skiing, boating, and fishing. Navigable channels to 325-acre Balsam Lake on the north and 364-acre Hemlock Lake on the south provide 2,586 acres of lake water to explore and fish. Several bays and small islands add interest. Historical Stout Island, accessible by boat from the dock or by ferry, has a lodge and restaurant known for great cuisine (www.stoutsislandlodge.com). The Tag-a-long 18-hole golf course with restaurant and lounge borders the lake and is just a few minutes' walk from the chalet (www.tagalonggolf.com).
The Birchwood area’s year-round trails are close by for hiking, biking, ATV, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, or cross-country skiing. The multi-use 65-mile Tuscobia State Trail intersects the Ice Age Trail at the north end of Red Cedar Lake and is the main off-road trail. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail, one of America's 11 national scenic trails, is a thousand-mile footpath winding through some of the state’s most beautiful natural areas.
