Martha's is a restored 19th century mill worker's cottage. Perfect spot for a retreat, with a rushing river, country roads for walking, general store, and library within strolling distance. Ideal for exploring or staying put. Set in a cluster of historic houses, there is a first-floor kitchen, sitting room, half bath, and parlor. Upstairs is a bedroom with queen size bed, a flexible space with pull-out couches for added sleeping area, full bath + soaking tub and glass shower. Simple and stylish.
The space
Shawn and I are artists who moved to Mill River in 2010 to make The Berkshires our home. We find Mill River the most delightful combination of quiet country life with a little activity-- Ormsbee Garage, The New Marlborough Town Hall, and the Mill River General Store make up the activity in town. Martha's is a free standing guest house tucked into our property that has farm garden and wooded hillside. We have roaming chickens and Gloria, our resident goose, who is friendly and slightly aloof. Guests will have quiet and privacy, we are next door to answer questions and engage as needed.
The Neighborhood
Mill River is one of five villages in the town of New Marlborough. Highlights within five miles include: York Lake for swimming and ice skating, Umpachene Falls, Goodnow Preserve, The New Marlborough Preserve, The Old Inn on the Green, The Southfield Store, Gedney Farm, Cantina 229, Thousand Acre Swamp, Questing, and The New Marlborough Meeting House. There are farm stores and farm stands, recreational land for hiking and cross country skiing, world class restaurants. Beyond all of these in immediate reach other highlights of the Berkshires include: skiing at Butternut or Catamount, Salisbury Ski Jump, Tanglewood Institute, Kripalu, Shakespeare & Company, The Clark, The Norman Rockwell Museum, Berkshire Botanical Gardens, Naumkeag, Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Chesterwood, The Egremont Barn, and dozens of restaurants and bakeries. The space between our house and Martha's is delineated by garden fencing. Guests have their own parking spot, stone path, front porch, small front garden, and entrance. From the living room there are glass sliders that open onto a pea stone terrace and outside space behind the house, which is fenced. Boundaries between our space and guest space are clear. (Gloria and chickens are not observant).
Other things to note
Laundry is on the premises but only available for stays longer than 7 days. The sitting room adjacent to the bedroom upstairs has two pull-out couches if needed, but keep in mind the additional sleeping space is not an enclosed bedroom.
