The Turquoise Trail is a scenic drive between Santa Fe and Albuquerque that runs through historic mining towns nestled in the valleys between hills with 100-mile views. The quaint town of Madrid, just 10 minutes down the road, offers a mile-long walk among charming shops, artist studios and casual restaurants that serve delicious New Mexican cuisine and host live music.
The unique beauty and history of Santa Fe is just 23 minutes North, with exceptional dining, shopping, museums and entertainment. Take a walk up Canyon Road on a Friday night when the art galleries host receptions for new exhibits (free refreshments!). Nibble a carnita while people-watching on the shaded Santa Fe Plaza.
Explore the museums, the Cathedral, and the shops, while drinking in the almost-constant Southwest sunshine. Expand your adventure with day trips to Bandelier National Monument, the Bradbury Science Museum at Los Alamos, and hiking or horseback riding in the Cerrillos Hills, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Abiquiu/Ghost Ranch. Parking on the property is free. The quarter-mile road from Rt. 14 to the house is unpaved dirt, but well maintained. No need for four-wheel drive unless it is extremely icy. A 15-minute drive North up Rt. 14 takes you into Santa Fe, and the 20-minute drive South takes you through the charming mining towns of Cerrillos, Madrid and Golden, past the Sandia Mountains to Albuquerque.
