Experience the charm of this beautiful 16-room home, perched on the site of the original Kinney Family homestead - the first Plainfield settlers in the 1700s. Known as Katuah, which means Sacred Sanctuary, this retreat offers a unique stay that blends modern comforts with creative Vermont character.
This historic colonial home was reconstructed by syndicated author and cartoonist Jeff Danziger and artist Jan Danziger in the 70s. It was later renovated by renowned Vermont architect Timothy D Smith AIA and his two children - designer-builder T. Adam Smith and owner Alexis Smith.
Original wide wood floors, artesian deep well water, exposed beams, brick wall accents, and rustic-chic decor create a warm and welcoming vibe. Four wood-burning stoves in brick Rumford fireplaces add allure (firewood provided with oil furnace backup!). The fully equipped kitchen offers updated appliances alongside vintage pieces.
Rest easy in each well-appointed bedroom. The upstairs greenhouse bathroom includes a bidet and a 6-foot antique clawfoot tub with a French-fill drain, while the second bathroom has a hand-tiled shower room with two benches and three showerheads. The third bathroom contains more handmade tiles, and the outhouse is an absolute classic!
When venturing out, Plainfield Village, the North East Kingdom, and Montpelier are a quick drive away. Or stay home and enjoy the natural beauty of walking, biking, and skiing on miles of trails winding through over 100 gorgeous acres. The large decks, gardens, and beautiful permaculture yard also create ample room to enjoy the great outdoors.

The open-sky deck is off-limits due to construction until further notice. The covered deck is still available.
The property does not have any exterior security cameras.
The primary bedroom has a queen futon for additional sleeping space.
There is also a twin bed in the living room under the window seat.
This vacation rental is not equipped with air-conditioning.
The property does have fans available to accommodate guests.
Parking notes: There is parking for eight vehicles. Eight can be parked in the driveway - including boat/RV parking. However, you will need to park your boat/RV at the top of the driveway (where it’s flat), which will require four-wheel drive, especially in the winter/snowy months.
