Positive: This large and comfortable cabin is located on a hillside, above the Red River, which is about 30 feet below the deck. It's in the upper valley, about five miles south of the town of Red River, at an elevation of 9177 ft. The upper valley is effectively a cul-de-sac, with very few homes and almost no traffic on the paved road, that's well below the cabin on the other side of the river. In other words, it's a very quiet, in-the-woods, alpine setting, unlike the many properties that are closer to the town. This allows you to feel much more like you are in the wilderness, but with all the comforts of home - yet still only ten minutes from all the shopping, restaurants, etc. Deer come down the hill, past the cabin to reach the river, every morning and evening. Cottontail rabbit and wild turkey can be seen throughout the day, as well as grey squirrels and chipmunks. The lack of light pollution is great for nighttime stargazing, too. The entire cabin is very comfortable, with great mattresses on the beds, comfortable seating, modern appliances, all the cookware and dinnerware you could want, etc.
Negative: There are only two concerns that you might consider, both of which we found to be less annoying than you might imagine. First, the cabin is accessed via a well-graded, 700-ft. rock and dirt road, which connects to the paved road that runs the length of the upper valley. The clearance on that dirt road is fine for pretty much any vehicle, but the rock and dirt driveway that leads down to the where you can park your vehicle for loading and unloading near the cabin's deck is very steep, dropping down 25-ft. from the dirt road, which is higher than the cabin's roof. We have an AWD SUV that made climbing up that driveway to the road "entertaining" but not difficult - just dropping it into low gear and getting a bit of a running start. Anyone equipped with a 4WD vehicle might find it to be "fun" instead of just "entertaining." LOL But I would not recommend renting this cabin, even in the summer months, with a low-clearance 2WD vehicle. Still, some front-wheel drive coupes and sedans could probably get up and out, when lightly loaded. In truth, I can only testify to what we experienced with a high-clearance AWD vehicle. That said, you have to realize that the location is spectacular for those equipped with the right vehicle, as there is nothing behind the cabin except that access road and the woods that rise above it. No Traffic = Silence, except for the wind in the trees and the sound of the river, immediately below. :-) The second issue is that an oudoor alarm box began sounding while we were there. This alarm indicates that the cabin's grey-water tank is nearly full. We were able to silence the alarm by pulling down and releasing a black rubber toggle switch that's on the side of the box. Then, guests are instructed to contact the owners so that they can schedule a service company to come empty the tank. We were not inconvenienced in any way after silencing the alarm.
Summary: A wonderful place to stay - especially for those who have an AWD or 4WD vehicle.
